Natural Flea Remedies for Dogs
Fleas are often seen as a pestilence that pet owners simply must live with. It is certainly true that it can be difficult to get rid of fleas and stay rid of them. This is particularly true if your dog goes outdoors and/or if you or your dog is around other animals on a frequent basis. Still, it is important to make the effort to get rid of fleas, especially if your dog is allergic to them.
There are many effective natural flea remedies for dogs.
• Garlic and brewer’s yeast – any pet owners absolutely swear by is garlic. As strange as it may sound, this simple natural element may be just the solution to your dog’s flea problems. All you have to do is introduce a little bit of garlic into your dog’s food. The fleas will be repelled by the taste and smell of the garlic in your dog’s skin and will vacate. If you notice that the garlic is not quite enough to handle your dog’s tough flea problem, consider using a mixture of garlic and brewer’s yeast. You can either purchase tablets with this mixture at a health food store or just mix up a bit on your own and then use it to get rid of your dog’s fleas.
• Bathe your dog – Dilute a little natural herb dog flea shampoo with warm water and rub it in a circle around his neck before bathing him. The ring will prevent fleas from traveling from his body to his head during his bath. Allow your dog to sit in a warm soapy water while you massage his skin. Fleas will drown below the neck, and you will have to pick off any fleas seen on his head. Your dog should be bathed weekly until all the fleas are gone.
• Itchy skin treatment – If the fleas are causing extreme itching, boil 2 quarts of water and add a ½ cup of regular or quick-cooking oatmeal to the water. Allow the water to boil for 10 minutes and let it stand until cool. Strain and discard the solids. Use the oatmeal water as a soothing rinse after your dog’s bath.
• Vitamin supplements – Flaxseed oil will strengthen your dog’s immunity to fleas and Vitamin E will help in lubricating the skin internally, and can help to reduce the effect of an allergic reaction.
Natural flea remedies for dogs are excellent measures to take when you want to rid your dog of fleas. They are typically less expensive than the over-the-counter products you might buy at your local pet store or at your vet’s office, and are a quick and convenient way to deal with the problem.
